A Pocket Dolly with a Flywheel: Polly http://motiodesign.com/02/07/a-pocket-dolly-with-a-flywheel-polly/ http://motiodesign.com/02/07/a-pocket-dolly-with-a-flywheel-polly/#comments Tue, 07 Feb 2012 00:09:01 +0000 mahsyar http://motiodesign.com/?p=2281 Most of the time, sliders can be a very useful devices that let us achieve dolly shots easily and affordably. However, the biggest challenge of using a slider is to make a shot really smooth and professional.

To achieve smooth shot, we need a better build quality of the bearings of the devices. Not only that, the way we move the slider is another.

However, there have been different approaches to make pocket dollys and sliders run smoothly, the most advanced devices are motorized and it is really expensive, but here is an approach that will probably revolutionize the way we look at the slider.

Created by Thomas Kress from Germany, the idea of creating “Polly” is that a flywheel simultaneously accumulates the kinetic energy and stabilizes the movement. This is a very interesting approach that more or less will solve the biggest problems about the compact sliders and allow us to create extremely smooth shot. One thing that I realize that it is actually not that very cheap. Estimated the price for the polly engine is around 1250€. Subscribe to the mailing list on their website if you want to be notified.

50 Dollar Follow Focus http://motiodesign.com/02/06/50-dollar-follow-focus/ http://motiodesign.com/02/06/50-dollar-follow-focus/#comments Mon, 06 Feb 2012 06:44:56 +0000 mahsyar http://motiodesign.com/?p=2277 Good news to all videographers, there’s a cheap follow focus currently being setup as a kickstart project that needs you to pledge to make this happen. It is a 50-Dollar Follow Focus. Being bold in term of the price, I think it well suits with those who are newly in the videography and cinematography arena. They will start the international shipping once the objectives met.

*Please not, the rails and quick-release plate in the pictures are not included. You will need a 15mm rails to use the follow focus

The follow focus have these awesome personality traits

The Stoutness of a Lumberjack

It’s designed to last longer than any camera you’ll ever own. We CNC machine most of the parts from heat-treated aluminum, and we designed those parts to be impervious to abuse. However, on the off-chance that you’re a world-renowned abuser of gear, you can rest easy knowing that the entire unit is user-servicable, and replacement parts will be available from us, or in some cases from hardware stores or industrial supply houses.

The Movement of a Ballerina

Just because you can’t drop a grand or more on a high-end follow focus, doesn’t mean you don’t need precise control. While it may be unconventional, our design eliminates backlash, letting you hit repeatable marks from either side of the marker. And we added a user-adjustable spring preload so that you can adjust the friction. The mechanism incorporates replaceable teflon thrust washers so it’s smooth, almost as if it were lubricated by guacamole. Because of these refinements, the 50-Dollar Follow Focus makes even the cheapest photo lenses focus smoothly.

The Detailed Personality of an IRS Auditor

It’s the small details that make a product a joy to use. That’s why we’ve spent the last year iterating the design way beyond our original notion. We added built-in marker lines. We added a repositionable handle that lets you quickly set a mark, or put the handle at your preferred position. We added user-adjustable friction. We also gave the handles a nice textured finish that feels exquisite on the fingertips.

Easy to Get Along With

We went with a toothed-belt design because it works with almost any lens you throw at it, and when set up properly, has almost no backlash. We coud have done it with gears (an adapter for geared lenses is in the works) but we wanted to avoid having to buy gears for all of our lenses. The belt gets the job done with the least expense. The belts and pulleys can be changed to accomodate any size lens or to give you just the right balance between speed and control.

A Post-Apocalyptic Instruction Manual

We’ve already got The Robot making parts, so about two weeks after our goal has been met, we’ll start shipping the rewards. However, The Robot is old and not very fast. It makes a fine product, but it does so at its own slow pace. To make sure the 50-Dollar Follow Focus stays true to its name, we need to be able to make them faster and we need to make bulk buys of the parts we can’t make ourselves. To do this, we need your help. The money we raise here will help us purchase some production tooling and will allow us to buy material in the quantities needed to hit our $50 price point. That’s it. Pledge now!

The 50-Dollar Follow Focus is probably the only camera accessory on the planet that comes with an instruction manual written under the assumption that you’ll be using the device after some sort of apocalypse. While perhaps not immediately useful, it’s a feature you’ll be sure to appreciate if that day ever comes.

What they need?

As they have already got the robot making parts, they will start shipping the rewards in two weeks after the goal has been met. Help them by pleging this project to make this thing happen. BTW this is  a very cool gears. Pledge now!

Canon 5D Mark III Spotted in the Wild http://motiodesign.com/02/05/canon-5d-mark-iii-spotted-in-the-wild/ http://motiodesign.com/02/05/canon-5d-mark-iii-spotted-in-the-wild/#comments Sun, 05 Feb 2012 01:21:08 +0000 mahsyar http://motiodesign.com/?p=2264 Few days back, there’s talk about these photos of a new camera by Canon that looks like the yet unannounced 5D mark III.

Few things that you can notice from the photo of the new camera, it has the almost same 5D form factor with battery attached to the bottom. Still, there’s no flash and there’s the back side layout that really looks like the Canon 7D mark II. As said by the Canon Rumors, this could be a 7D mark II, just the otherwise says that it is a future 5D considering missing popup flash and larger prism.

One of the most intriguing announcement that has made by Canon in late 2011 is the development of a 4K HDSLR

“Incorporating an enhanced version of the video-capture capability offered in the current EOS-series lineup, the new camera will be ideally suited for cinematographic and other digital high-resolution production applications. The model will be equipped with a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and, enabling the recording of 4K video”

However, we don’t really know when the capability of 4K shooting will be revealed.

The photo above was taken by Stephen Oachs from Aperture Academy

Adobe Photoshop CS6; A new look http://motiodesign.com/12/22/adobe-photoshop-cs6-a-new-look/ http://motiodesign.com/12/22/adobe-photoshop-cs6-a-new-look/#comments Thu, 22 Dec 2011 04:29:34 +0000 mahsyar http://motiodesign.com/?p=2205 This is the new future look of Adobe Photoshop CS6 that will bring you a darker interface theme with new capabilities. There will be also autosave and a handful of other tools.

Looking at the Photoshop CS6, it is darker and more Aperture-like user interface. It is quite a huge change that can make certain people hard feels unwelcome. So this is why Adobe provide this testers with also the option to revert to the old look.

In my point of view, I like the color given as it is more eye-candy to me even for a long duration of post editing. It it almost the same factor why I like Adobe After Effects.
